I have wanted to write a blog for my site for so long and just never had the time, and I always thought that it would be something I would start and never finish....well here it goes! I say to people that I work in pictures, not words, but I today I am determined to do this. I want to put into words the behind the scenes of my photo shoots and my last family portoirt session is such a good example of how less than ideal the conditions can be, but how working with such lovely people can make a shoot go so much easier than expected.
I love the drive from Port Pirie to Moonta Bay and Simms Cove seemed like it could be the most idyllic spot - it has the ocean, the beach and the remnants of an old jetty, which in my mind would make a great backdrop. This was my first shoot there, and as usual, I was half an hour early to scout the area. I was disappointed to see a strong headwind and lots of seaweed! The sun was starting to descend and cast the brightest glare, right behind the jetty. I was so disappointed, but found a few places behind the cliff that could shelter us as much as possible.
Then my family drives into the car park and I could tell they were disappointed too, but as frequent visitors they suggested a bit closer to the jetty at Moonta Bay. The conditions were similar, but we thought, let's give it a crack anyway.
The colours of the water, rocks, beach and vegetation meant the scenery and backdrops would still be beautiful. My main hurdle was the wind. I made sure to take a lot more photos than I normally would. I knew that there would be quite a few photos that I would potential have to stitch together, and once I started editing, I was glad I had done so. The Hewetts were naturals, and their two girls did everything I asked with a smile on their faces. They made my job easy so all I had to focus on was making sure their poses showed their personalities, and positioned in a way so that the the wind was blowing their hair away from their face.
So, all in all, I learnt a bit about Moonta Bay! I will definitely shoot there again, and I have since downloaded a weather app that shows me the wind strength and direction!!
